Loonies for Literacy

1/27/2016

Hi everyone,
With today being Family Literacy Day, we are asking that students bring in a Loonie ($1) in support of Literacy Programs. I had a few students bring one in today, but I'm thinking that maybe I forgot to pass along the message! If possible, please send this in your child's message baggie before Friday! Thanks!

A note about homework:
Because we are displaced from our classroom for a couple weeks, I have decided not to send homework until we settle back into our regular routine. I hope nobody minds too much ;). Enjoy the break!

FDK Classroom Makeover

1/22/2016

Happy Friday! Below is a memo from Mrs. Conway and Mr. Deveaux re: the Full Day Kindergarten classroom makeover that will be happening over the next little while:

Parents, we are very excited to inform you that Topsail Elementary's Kindergarten classes (Ms. O'Driscoll & Mrs. Beaumaster) have been asked to take part in a Kindergarten Makeover project this year. This is an initiative of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to produce a video of a model Kindergarten classroom to use as a training video to support the implementation of Full Day Kindergarten (FDK), which is scheduled to start in 2016. The video will highlight both the teaching methodologies as well as the physical set up of a model Kindergarten classroom to support the philosophy and implementation of the FDK program.

This project will be completed in three phases. First, will be a minor renovation of the classroom. The second phase will be the purchasing and setting up of the new resources, and the third and final stage will be the production of the video tape to be used with other schools for the FDK training.

Part one of the classroom makeover project will take place over the next two weeks. It consists of having two of our classrooms remodeled, which will consist of removal of shelving, new washrooms, painting and plastering. The classroom renovation will start this weekend.

To accomodate this remodeling, the students' classrooms will be relocated to different classrooms down by the Learning Resource Centre.

The second and third phases of this project will take place in February, and you will be informed of each of these phases as they happen.

During phase one (beginning Monday, January 25th), the students will continue to go to their lockers as usual. We will have older students and teachers to redirect them to their new, temporary classrooms.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Conway or Mr. Deveaux.

Thank you!

Family Literacy Day

1/21/2016

Good morning!

Next Wednesday (January 27th) is Family Literacy Day. We will be participating by having special guests (parents, grandparents, etc.) come in and read a story to the children. An orange form was sent home last week to gauge interest in volunteer readers. If you are interested in coming in, but did not send in your form yet, please e-mail me ASAP! So far, I have one parent volunteer for the morning (Green Group) and three volunteers for the afternoon (Red Group).

I will be sending an e-mail to volunteers shortly with information on Family Literacy Day and instructions of what to do when you arrive at the school!

Thank you! Merci!

Winter Gear

1/20/2016

Good morning everyone,

Just a reminder that any day the children are scheduled to have gym (Days 2 and 4), there is a very likely chance that it will be outdoors. I am noticing that many children are not prepared for outdoor play, and do not have appropriate winter gear. Your child should always come to school with:
-A winter coat
-Snowpants
-A warm hat
-Gloves or mittens (preferably 2 pairs)
-Boots
- A scarf or neck warmer

It is also possible that I will take the children outside to play on days other than scheduled gym days -- so always send them prepared! If possible, please practice with your child how to independently get dressed/undressed for outdoor play!

Thanks,
Ms. O'Driscoll

Hi Everyone,

The January calendar was just released from the office, and there are a few important things to make note of on your calendars.

Firstly, due to Kinderstart, there will be no school for Kindergarten students next Friday, January 15th, 2016.

Secondly, Wednesday, January 27th is Family Literacy Day! Please make an effort to read with your child. It is important to read to your child on a daily basis!

Thanks!
Ms. O'Driscoll

Good morning!

A copy of the January calendar will be sent home in message baggies today. I still have not received the official calendar from the office, but I did create one with the Gym/Music schedule to make life a little easier. It is also available in the Calendar section of my website!

Thanks! Have a great week!

I hope everyone had a lovely and relaxing Christmas break. It seemed to go by quicker than ever this year! I am hoping 2016 will be a wonderful year for us all!

Thank you so much for all of the lovely cards and gifts! I love each and every one of them and really appreciate your thoughtfulness!

The January calendar has not been released from the school yet, but I'm hoping it will be sometime today so I can edit it for our class and send it home by tomorrow. Today is Day 4, and the kids have indoor gym. There are no activities scheduled for tomorrow.

More January updates to follow!
